I'm not sure the exact question. They started on the instrument with
liabilities? Or suffered them *before* developing great technique?
None that I know of.
Jon Mark, guitarist for the Mark-Almond band, (a reconfiguration of
John Mayall's "Turning Point" album but without John Mayall), suffered
an injury well into a successful career as a pop-jazz guitarist. He
played nylon string exclusively (to my knowledge).
After 3 albums with the group Marc-Almond, in 1972 Mark lost his left
hand ring-finger while climbing a palm tree in Hawaii. He apparently
reworked his approach and they released an album the following year.
He continued to play and record throughout the 70's and 80's, sometimes
with significant jazz players including Billy Cobham and Mike Nock.
He's continued to work and record at least until 2008, now living in
New Zealand.
