Guys...if u read many of my post you know that i converted to tube
amps and am not looking back...but.....
Last weekend i was invited to a jam...they said 'You dont have to
bring an amp...we have amps here"..
So..great...i dont have to LUG my 40 lb tube amp around..

Waht they had was a PA System...it was a Peavey XR 600 C from i guess
late 70s.

I thought " this is gonna REALLY suck'..

I cannot tell you how FANTASTIC the tone was...the pa was totally
stock with the stock speakers. Im looking for one of these now, just
to have a solid state amp...and its pretty small too.
I didnt use ANY reverb...i was getting like a Johnny Smith
sound...very round..super FULL...just...BEAUTIFUL.

Anyone have the experience of use a PA for a guitar amp? Im blown
away.

I did some gigs years ago with an R&B/blues band. The guitarist played
a Strat through a Peavey PA head and an open-backed Fender cabinet
that was actually a combo amp (Twin?) with the head removed. He got a
good sound, but I teased him a bit, good-naturedly, about his gear.
Shortly after that, I read an interview with Duke Robillard in which
he described the amp setup he was using at the time - a Peavey PA head
and a Fender Twin cabinet.

Just curious: What guitar were you using?

I had a 70's-era Peavey XR600B for years that I used as a practice PA head,
but never tried to run guitar through it. Now I wish I had. At some point
early in my possession of it, I managed to fry the reverb by running an
input into an output or something like that. It still kept ticking for
years, despite massive abuse on my part.

I had a friend who was a great funk bassist; once or twice he used it as a
bass head with his Music Man Stingray and it sounded fantastic. Actually
sounded much better than whatever he usually used. I tried to convince him
to use one as a bass head, but he always turned his nose up at the idea. As
it was a "PA" head, and had the dreaded Peavey logo, he just couldn't be
convinced, despite the sound. This was in the mid-80's. In those days, the
"Peavey" logo was considered a mark of shame.

I sold it about a decade ago to a friend of mine who still has it. As far
as I know, it still works, and, despite that the guy has mountains of PA
gear from the days of the great 3000-watt tri-amped T40 bands -- picture
spandex and a fog machine-- he still uses it often.

Question - what was your setup?
Did you go thru any effects before the house mixer, or straight thru a
DI...etc?

I go thru a house PA all the time but run it thru a POD first. Works well
enough for me,
but much depends on the sound guy on the board.

Thanks.

One time, 20 yrs ago, when my Carvin Lawsuit Series X amp failed on a
wedding band-type gig and I had to finish w/ the Peavey XR600B we used to
keep around as a spare. I played it through the Carvin's EV. Sounded fine.
