I'm curious about what otheres have done with Sonny Rollins' "Pent Up House". The changes listed in more than one Real Book seem to be a little more complex than the blowing changes, which are pretty basic ii-V changes. The Real Book changes sound pretty correct, looking like this:

||:CMaj7/D D7(b9#5) CMaj7/D |D7(b9#5) / / /|GMaj9 Ab7 GMaj9|/ / / /:||

|Dm7 / G7(b9#5 Dm7|/G7(b9#5 / / /|Cm9 / F13 /|CMaj7/D D7(b9#5) CMaj7/D|

D7(b9#5) / / /|GMaj9 Ab7 GMaj9|/ / / /||

The blowing changes are:

||Am7 / / /|D7 / / /|GMaj7 / / /|/ / E7 /|Am7 / / /|D7 / / /|GMaj7///|////|

|Dm7 / / /|G7 / / /|Cm7 / / /|F7 / / /|Am7 / / /|D7 / / /|GMaj7 / / /|// E7/||

Now, a teacher, whose work I respect, is teaching the tune as using the blowing changes all the way through. The changes are similar in function enough to allow the melody to work over either set of changes, so I can see how using the blowing changes would work as the main melody.

Having not heard this tune played out very often, I'm note sure if it's a legit way to play the tune. This teacher says that he's always used the blowing changes, never heard anyone using the original changes. Anyone else have this experience? Is this common with this tune?

You really ought to get with the facebook jazz/jazz guitar groups for
this--you'll get a hell of a lot more yield.

Me, I dunno.

Well, those first set of changes are essentially an arrangement from the New Real Book which also sends you to the blowing changes.
Other Fake books have So called blowing changes only.
The thing is the above ones are for the Pianist to voice, and to play the rhythmic figures.
You can listen to it here

Bg
It's still essentially the Blowing changes with a D pedal for the 1st 2 measures.
