Oh man, that's very sad news...Completely changed the harmonic consciousness of every guitarist who ever heard him, and always swung in his subtle way.
What more can one say. RIP, Ed...

He was the man. He rebirthed a whole different excitement about guitar
when I discovered him late, in the mid-90's. As you say a whole new
harmonic consciousness.

A one of a kind player.

Damn. One of my favorites. Loved his
work on "Pure Desmond."

Another Tim (is that you?) has recorded a video dedicated to Ed's
passing (Tim Lerch).

It's excellent and fitting, "I'll Be Seeing You".

One of my favorites without a doubt!

The 'Marlboro man' of jazz guitar. So Cool!

And the chords. The chords!
Always tasteful, always colorful, always perfect.
Like a Mozart composition. Never a chord wasted.

RIP Ed!

Oh, for sure.

I'm a Canuck, and when I started playing guitar in the 60's my 2 main guys on TV shows and radio (Both CBC) were Ed Bickert and Lenny Breau.

Ed and Jim Hall have been my faves for ever.

RIP Mr. B.

Speaking of Jim Hall....

What was that do-hingy thing he had around the 1st fret on his Gibson?
Was it a capo or something else?

This was around the late 50's.

I forget the proper name for it, but it was there to keep unplayed strings from vibrating and maybe preventing Feedback. I think Herb Ellis used one as well.
