If you check the video that follows you will see that Atilla has very heavy, almost bass sized, string in the low E position. Does any one know anything about this ( string size, tuning, the other strings, why, etc.). TIA Charlie

I first met Attila back in 1968 where he turned me on to his tune “ The Birds and the Bees.” All I know, is he liked to experiment and invent. So, possibly he got the idea of a lower, thicker string from Tal Farlow. I think Tal used a thicker A string. It’s obviously a good idea for solo guitar style. I know that he designed sets for La Bella. He was a good man and interesting player; a mix of avant-guarde and bop. He revered Jimmy Raney and helped Jimmy on and off through difficult times. I prefer heavier gauges myself. Some of the older players did. It’s a beefier, bolder sound. It lends itself well to bop and the like. Of, course it ends up bring personal and your answer , Charlie , would be along that line (pardon the pun).

Thanks, I like heavy strings myself but that E string looks like you could send telegraph messages over it.

How heavy do you string it, Charlie?

I moved (up) to 12-50 (Thomastik-Infeld) a few years back. This month
I bought a second guitar--exact model as my current, and used the same
gauge strings. After a set-up, the new one felt like it had lighter
gauge strings. My guitar tech raised the action (lower by about a 1/64"
he said), and it felt identical again.

But playing them back and forth while one was still lower, had me
pondering moving up to a heavier gauge again. If my dainty finger-tops
could acclimate to 13's, the pay-back in tone and potential dynamic
range is certainly worth it.
