I'm of no help. I've never used one. But I've always wanted one- but
every time I find one it's not the model i would want or it's super
overpriced. I did miss out on a good one on ebay about a year ago and
was bummed because it was right and the right price but I forgot to
watch the end of the auction and I was outbid. I love my clarus slr
though and wish they'd make that again so i could get another. I
think the current AI amps are too large and so I also think the WW is
too large. i throw my clarus sl-r in my messenger bag and take it on
the plane no problem. and I can usually find a small extension cab
where I go so it works out great. at home I still carry the same
messenger bag and just carry my extension cab (either a redstone rs8
or the buscarino chameleon). i can fit my clarus, some music folios
and a footstool and some cabling easily in a messenger bag so it's a
great situation. try that with a WW!

One of the WW models is popular with bass players. I heard a local guy
using one with his L5 and it was a good sound. The portability of the
AI is great but I think the WW might have a warmer sound.

I believe the WW is the head Jim Hall uses.

On at least one of the education videos I've seen, Jim is using a Woods head
through a Kolbe cabinet.

I remember seeing John Abercrombe at Lulu White's in Boston in the 70s and
he was using a Woods head and a GIANT Lexicon rack-mount digital reverb.
Back then the digital technology was very new and the Lexicon was about the
size of an ADAT (3 rack spaces I think). I spoke with him about his setup
and he said he was travelling only with his guitars (I seem to remember an
ES-335 and one of those funny little Fender 4-string electric mandolins from
the 60s), the Lexicon and the Walter Woods. His contract stipulated that
the venue provide the speakers. He was heavy into the ECM thing back then
and felt that setup was most of his sound. He wasn't as fussy about the
speakers and said that whatever they got him was usually fine (I think he
had a single 15" showman bottom at LuLu's).

I used to own a nice WW Stereo amp (100 W/side), and I'd play it
through two Raezer's Edge cabs. Versatile amp, great sound, built
like a tank, took pedals well, easy to carry around. I went to the
dark side, though (TUBES!!!), and ended up selling it. Of course, I
regret selling it just because on some gigs I'd like to have a smaller
rig to carry around, but sound-wise I have no regrets.

Walter doesn't make this model anymore -- he's just making the larger
watt bass amps (1000W and bigger), but if you can find one at a
reasonable price, I'd say go for it. I never A-B'd it with an AI, but
I've played a student's AI, and I liked it fine.

Did I mention I like tubes now? ;-)

Have fun,
Marc

Hi,
I'm playing a Frenzel "Super Deluxe Plus" with reverb, in the road
case: http://www.frenzeltubeamps.com It's 40W, which through a good
cab can knock a wall down! It breathes like no solid state amp can...
