Yes it was. It seems to be out of print currently. Wait for a used
one to be available cheaper from amazon.

Yes. Steve Allen introduction, Harry and Bill in conversation, Bill playing Star Eyes, etc. Entire film available on DVD, I'm sure.

I like to watch the interaction between the two brothers on that one.
Harry is the uptight older brother, ordering Bill around, putting
words in his mouth, and just generally annoying.
Bill just kind of does what Harry tells him to do.
Harry committed suicide sometime after that, and his younger brother
followed him, in his own fashion.
I got a lot more out of the Marian McPartland Show.

But this one has those three great examples on How About You. His
first one is superb. And his "simple but centered" one is also
great. The "rambling" one is fun also as Evans tries to play in a
somewhat disorganized fashion, which I'm sure was hard for him. Harry
kind of hints that that's the way (the rambling one) he (Harry)
plays. I suspect that the questions were somewhat agreed upon
beforehand, like those Glen Gould shows (in which Gould wrote the
questions and the answers).

Thanks for posting. I never saw the whole thing.

The true master makes his/her own discoveries. There's
nothing wrong with copying your favorite players, but
you've got to find your own voice, or you'll sound like everyone
else. Bill and his brother touch on this when they mention
the canned "tricks" or "licks" that people play, to essentially fake
their way into "mastery" of their instrument, when in reality
you cannot really fake this higher level of understanding of
the art form.

I also like what Bill said in the beginning, that he disagrees
that the professional's opinion is more important than the
non-musician's, or layman's opinion. His point is that
musicians can become so involved with the pure mechanics
and theory and technique of making music, that we can
lose sight of the bigger picture of whether or not we are
making good, interesting music, and not just playing
scales.

Watching this also made me think about tooth
loss in heroin/meth users. Bill hid his addiction by
dressing well, but the tooth loss is obvious.

Amy Winehouse also lost a couple of teeth as
well. Supposedly the heroin itself doesn't cause the
tooth loss, but the general lifestyle of the junkie
causes poor overall health in general.

Yeah that caught my attention as well.

I think he might have used the word naive in describing the
uneducated listener.

Further, that naiveness as a listener was/is a good thing!!
Interesting!!

Yeah, I've thought this for a long time. It's possible to listen to
music with the "beginner's mind" if you try.

I can't help noting the distinction between this and the dictum issued

Exhibits are for art lovers, not professional art historians. Some of
us are too close to the subject
of archtop guitars to appreciate the exhibit on its own terms.
