This is Chicago jazzer Fareed Haque, who is very good. I'm not sure
about the PM slam -- I think it was a dumb inside joke or something.
Fareed's first two albums from the 90's were very good, but I stopped
following him after a while..

Fareed is influenced by Martino, McLaughlin, Paco de Lucia and others,
as I recall from reading about him in the 80s. I liked his first
album a lot.

I have a couple of his cds and they are very enjoyable and original. Fareed
has certainly soaked up a lot of influences in addition to those you
mention. ....joe

What he said was obviously some kind of joke (maybe it was an inside
joke referring to someone else having said that) and maybe didn't
realize it would end up on youtube.

Maybe he prefers Hendrix? ;-)

Or maybe Pat was playing a gig across town and all the guitar geeks went there
instead to Fareed's show.

Years ago I knew a piano player, very good, very BENT sense of
humor...
I would say stuff to him like:

"man that Wynton Kelly solo on blah blah was just incredible!"

His reply:

FUCK Wynton Kelly! The he'd flash a big grin and a nod, as if to say,
yea, that solo was great, I'll never cut him, so what or o well -
--

It became quite the faux pas and we used it all the time on
unsuspecting newbies (one of the great pleasures of playing with
multiple 17 piece bands...always a new guy or 2 on the bandstand)

So,

New sax player...yea, that Bird solo on the 4th take of
Kalausintineewiennie is killer!
four us standing round, simultaneously: "FUCK BIRD!"

guess you had to be there...context is everything?

Absurdity is funny, especially when inside jokes about the absurdity
have previously been passed around.

It makes sense that the guy on youtube was saying Martino is so good
so fuck him like the person said about Kelly. Jim Hall got in trouble
when he was quoted as saying, as a joke, to Wes Montgomery that he
wanted to catch his thumbs in a car door.....musician's humor....no
dis to Montgomery or Martino.

Yep, that's Fareed Haque, who besides being a great jazz and classical (and
indian and jam band, etc) guitar player is clearly hugely influenced by
Martino.

Listen to this clip with Melvin Rhyne, where he is chanelling the Joyous Lake
martino vibe (guitar solo around 2:00)

Tommy Tedesco could play great in a tutu, as I recall from the Gong
show.

I think it was just an attempt at humour, I dont think it was a diss.
By the way does this music count as jazz or funk?
Like they take turns soloing - and theres no real "song" - so thats like
jazz, but then its way too locked in compared to the usual "loose" jazz.

I always got mixed up, Id but albums of "jazz funk" and theyd sound like
shredder guitarists or prog rock albums.

Just wondered.

Having viewed the clip, I'm pretty sure the Pat Martino wisecrack was
because he was in one of those "stuck on the same riff for 64 bars"
thing that Martino does at least once each set (and Martino himself
has joked about it).

I'm not sure what you'd call it, but Martino diss notwithstanding,
that clip has kind of grown on me since I first heard it. It took me
a minute to realize that although the phrase "Poodle Factory" might
(or might not) be a clever/stupid/profound statement about something
or other, it was also a convenient mmenonic for playing in 7 (or
mixing and matching "poodle", "factory" and "bark" to come up with
more complex schemes). I guess one man's "poodle factory" is
another's "ta ka di mi".
