Anyone know of other
vocal/instrumental music along these lines?
Michele Weir (www.micheleweir.com) is a fantastic arranger who's done tons
of vocal work like that. Her charts are usually pretty demanding for singers
and chock-full of harmonic derring-do.

Most of the hipper arrangers for the big bands of today (Bob
Florence,Bob Brookmeyer, Rob McConnell, and a number of others) write
in Puerling's harmonic style, the only difference is the beautiful
blend of Shelton, Puerling Herman, and Dresslar's voices. SU has been
around for more than 30 years and most jazz musicians are aware of
them.
I've written a big band arrangement and a work for orchestra based
on Puerling's arrangement, which I transcribed a
number of years ago.

They were exquisite. Still love them, as ‘square’ as they may seem. There is beauty everywhere in music.
